Kurt Jackson

More enormous canvases. River is an exhibition of Jackson’s paintings, sketches and found objects based around the rivers Liffey, Thames, Avon and Dart. On at Plymouth City Museum until 10 July. Jackson often paints in the open, which is sometimes hard to conceive given the size of some of the paintings. That’s one enormous brolly.

He captures large expanses of water brilliantly and breathtakingly – it’s as if you’ve just stepped into the light. The moorland scenes are dynamic and immediate – the best representation I have seen.

Inspiring.

“In Cornwall my subjects are mostly places I know well, that I visit over and over again – certain areas of coast, moorland and valleys. I tend to work on projects, usually over a year, which are based on a particular aspect of Cornish culture or a distinct tract of countryside. Capturing a fleeting impression doesn’t interest me. In all my paintings the aim is to convey my feelings and sense of awareness in that particular environment.”
