A book which has gripped and annoyed me in equal measure and now I can’t stop thinking about it.  It’s so clever and a slow-burner – or maybe I’m just a slow burner…. But such an intelligent adult book.

Susan’s ex-husband Edward sends her a manuscript for a book he has finally written, after decades of procrastination.  He always regarded her as his greatest critic.  The book recounts a horrific and pacey murder story where Tony is left without his family after a series of inept, head-in-the-sand decisions on his part.  Susan increasingly sees the writing as a commentry on her own situation, stuck in an unfaithful second marriage, allowing her life to be governed by others.
